Drop in U.S. consumer spending clouds Fed rate hike outlook

U.S. consumer spending fell in August for the first time in seven months while inflation showed signs of accelerating, mixed signals that could keep the Federal Reserve cautious about raising interest rates. The Commerce Department said on Friday that consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, fell 0.1 percent last month after accounting for inflation. “Consumers took a breather in August,” said Chris Christopher of IHS Global Insight

Fed’s internal split tied to dueling views on jobs outlook
September 23, 2016 by elegant · Leave a Comment
The split at the Federal Reserve over when to next raise interest rates appears to hinge largely on disagreements over the labor market outlook, comments from policymakers on Friday suggest. When the Fed earlier this week decided to stand pat on rates, Fed Chair Janet Yellen said she felt the labor market had more room to run before it could overheat. On Friday one of the dissenters, Boston Fed chief Eric Rosengren, explained that his vote …

The U.S. Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged on Wednesday but strongly signaled it could still tighten monetary policy by the end of this year as the labor market improved further. Fed Chair Janet Yellen, speaking after the central bank's latest policy statement, said U.S. growth was looking stronger and rate increases would be needed to keep the economy from overheating and fueling high inflation.

September 7, 2016 by admin · Leave a Comment
By David Shepardson WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Auto supplier Robert Bosch GmbH [ROBG.UL] concealed the use of Volkswagen AG's secret “defeat device” software that it helped design and demanded in 2008 that the German automaker provide legal protection in its use, lawyers for American owners alleged in a court filing. The filing on Friday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco expands on claims plaintiffs lawyers made in August, when they alleged Bosch was a “knowing and active participant” in Volkswagen's decade-long scheme to…

September 7, 2016 by admin · Leave a Comment

September 2, 2016 by elegant · Leave a Comment
Ireland's fragile coalition government will try on Friday to overcome cabinet divisions on whether to join Apple in appealing against a multi-billion-euro back tax demand that the European Commission has slapped on the iPhone maker. Finance Minister Michael Noonan has insisted Dublin would fight any adverse ruling ever since the European Union began investigating the U.S. tech giant's Irish tax affairs in 2014.

Solid U.S. employment gains expected in August; jobless rate seen falling
September 2, 2016 by creative · Leave a Comment
U.S. employment growth likely moderated in August after two straight months of hefty gains, but was probably still strong enough to push the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates later this year. The unemployment rate is forecast falling one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.8 percent. The Labor Department will release its closely watched employment report on Friday and readings in line with expectations would reinforce views that the economy has regained speed after almost stalling in the first half of the year
