Sumner Redstone to step down from Viacom board

Controlling shareholder Sumner Redstone will step down from the Viacom board of directors after the company's annual meeting in February, according to a company filing on Friday. The ailing, 93-year old Redstone, who has not attended an annual investor meeting since 2014, will continue to participate in meetings in a “non-voting” role, according to the filing. It was Redstone's decision to step down, according to a source familiar with the situation, who did not want to be named because discussions were private.

By Lucia Mutikani WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. unemployment rate fell to a nine-year low of 4.6 percent in November, as employers added another 178,000 jobs, making it almost certain that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates later this month. The unemployment rate hit its lowest level since August 2007 because more people found work but also because the labor force shrank as more people retired, lowering the number of working-age people in the labor force to 62.7 percent. The U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against DirecTV, alleging the company acted as a ringleader to unlawfully swap information with rival pay-TV companies during negotiations over whether to show Dodgers baseball games in the Los Angeles area. The department said DirecTV, now owned by AT&T , swapped information with Cox Communications, Charter Communications and AT&T, to win bargaining leverage against Time Warner Cable, which distributes a channel showing Dodgers games in Los Angeles.

U.S. import prices fell for the first time in six months in August on weak petroleum and food costs, but the declining trend is slowing as oil prices stabilize and the dollar's rally fades. Import prices slipped 0.2 percent last month after gaining 0.1 percent in July. August's drop was the first since February and was led by a 2.8 percent decline in petroleum prices.
